Of course, I knew the use of "liberal" and "conservative" would wind people up but Klein's paper is worth reading: the claim is that most economists are backers of the status quo, aka "conservatives" and also Democrats. Those in favor of more liberalization, aka "liberals" are more likely to be Republican.

But words are what you make of them, no? See, for instance, Socialism on Wall Street.

As for Rothbard, yes he wrote a lot but that doesn't necessarily make his ideas any clearer. Arguably his statement of freedom regresses to "A man is free when he is not unfree". But it would be churlish to criticise him too much: almost every thinker on liberty has end up going round in circles.timarrhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06254802085744425067noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7366878066073177705.post-82041586397489216562012-09-25T07:21:05.300+01:002012-09-25T07:21:05.300+01:00"Economics was founded on liberal principles...."Economics was founded on liberal principles..." ??? Liberal principles in the pre-Roosevelt era, is that what you mean?

You accuse Rothbard of being vague? He wrote a dozen books on these subjects, perhaps you should read them.

The current definitions of Liberal and Conservative are exactly the opposite of what you suggest. The Democratic, i.e. Liberal forces, are the ones who are enacting the laws that seek to modify behaviour through taxation.

Go buy a pack of cigarettes in Chicago. Interventionist policies, yes. I agree. Conservative policies, hardly.

Trnoreply@blogger.com
